When to Find Time to do Your Bible Study: Married without Kids

With our crazy busy lives, it’s often hard to find time to sit down and do our Bible study. We’re so good at finding reasons why we don’t have time. Many times we ask ourselves, “When am I to do my Bible study?”

Anytime. Seriously, anytime.

There are many sermons, lectures, and devotions about when is the best time to do your Bible study. While these contain great advice, it differs from person to person. As always, this is a great thing to pray about. Ask the Lord when He wants you to spend time with Him. We are all wired differently and have different attention spans at different times of the day.

Try to be consistent with the times you choose, but don’t beat yourself up if it changes from time to time. For me, I know I can concentrate better and dive deeper after my husband leaves for work, after I’ve gotten ready for the day, and when the dishes are done. I’m pretty consistent with this timing, but there are days when it doesn’t work out and I can’t get to it until the afternoon, evening, or at all. And that’s okay!

Disclaimer: It’s easy to sit here and write about all the different times to do your Bible study, but it’s not always as easy to just sit down and do it. I’ll be the first to say that there are days when I am lacking the ability to do my Bible study during any one of those times written above. There are times when I simply don’t want to do my Bible study or feel like I’m too busy to do so. But I have learned that those are the best times to push myself to spend even 10 minutes doing something with the Lord…anything. It is a daily battle with ourselves, but I know that even amongst our brokenness, we can push ourselves.

So here are some ideas for when to find time to do your Bible study.

During the morning, before your husband wakes up.

-If you’re an early bird, this is a great time for you. The house is still quiet, there are no distractions, and you can go pretty much anywhere in your house or apartment to be alone with Christ.

During the morning, after your husband leaves for work.

-If you’re not an early bird (like me), it’s easiest to wait when the house is going to be quiet. Kiss the hubby good-bye, send him on his way, and head to the table to open up God’s word.

During the middle of the day, when your mind is ready to focus on Christ.

-I know I have a hard time sitting down and focusing when I have a thousand things storming through my brain. I struggle to place those thoughts and ‘to-do’s’ off to the side to do my study. So I have found it easier to focus when I get one or two things out of the way before I sit down and give my attention to Christ. This doesn’t mean that I’m putting Him second or third, it means that I’m preparing myself to not be distracted by the many things to do each day.

During the afternoon before your husband comes home.

-This is a great time to do your Bible study when the house is still quiet. You’re not having to worry about cooking dinner just yet or making sure the house is mostly put together before your husband comes home. Whether you work during the day or have a busy schedule during the day, you can definitely find time before your husband comes home.

At night, after dinner.

-It is okay to not spend every second with your husband when he comes home from work. Don’t go to the extent of ignoring him, but when dinner is done and he’s taken care of (after all, we are our husbands helper [find verse]), it’s okay to go to a separate room and spend time with the Lord in your Bible study.

If you work, your lunch break is a perfect time.

-Sometimes, this is the only part during your day where you have free time. Use it! I know it may feel like it’s the only time to just sit and relax, but relax with God.

There are plenty of moments to find time to do your Bible study. Like I said earlier, pray about what time is best. The important part is that we try to find time each and every day, even if it’s just praying.
