In addition to having a new found love interest with baskets in 2020, I also fell in love with throw pillows. My many love interests with home decor has caused me to start getting crafty and creative – these love interests can get pretty expensive if not careful. In my attempt to find some gorgeous textured boho throw pillows, I decided it would be a lot better to try and make my own DIY boho throw pillow and save myself a lot of money. And it worked!
Now I’m letting you in on my little DIY project so that you can create your own DIY boho throw pillow. It’s simple, inexpensive, and you can make yours look however you want. This process can work for any style as well! I’ll share with you and walk you through 4 easy steps to help you create your own DIY boho throw pillow.
Supplies
-Basic throw pillow cover – IKEA has great ones for a few bucks.
-Acrylic paint – The cheap 67 cent bottles from Walmart or any art store works! I used black and a burnt sienna color.
-Paint brush – any will do.
-Cardboard or Foil – This will be used to protect your pillow.
-Thread – You’ll need 2 regular sized spools of your choice of colored thread.
-Chenille Yarn – Choose whatever color you’d like. You won’t need hardly any of this yarn, so don’t go all out with it. Find something inexpensive (and on sale!).
Step 1: Cut a piece of cardboard or foil
You’ll need to cut a piece of cardboard or foil that will fit the inside of your throw pillow cover exactly. This is to protect the other side of the throw pillow from getting paint on it. The paint will seep through one side and stick itself to the opposite side of the pillow if you’re not careful.
Step 2: Paint your design
I recommend drawing out a design first before you paint it on your throw pillow. This allows you to come up with several different ideas and to find the one you like the best. My dad always told me, “measure twice and cut once.” In this instance, you want to draw it out twice and paint once so you’re not messing up in the process.
If you buy a throw pillow cover with a design already on it, the paint will not cover it completely.
When you’re done painting your design, you’ll need to let it dry and set for 24 hours.
Step 3: Create the tassels
In the time you’re letting the paint dry, create your tassels! You can easily buy some from your craft store. But I created this pillow during a lockdown, so DIY tassels were my next best option.
I actually used my phone as the width for how long I wanted my tassels to be. However long you want your tassel to be, you need to find an object that you can wrap the thread around several times. Then wrap your thread (basic sewing thread) around and around and around until you achieve the thickness of the tassel you want.
Pull the wrapped thread off your item, but be careful not to let it undo or tangle. Cut one end of the circle of wrapped thread so you’re left with a folded bunch of thread all the same length. Then tie a section of thread towards the top of the fold to make it a tassel.
Repeat this process for however many tassels you want.
Step 4: Attach the tassels
When your tassels are finished, attach them to the corners of the pillow by sewing them on. This step is really easy and you don’t have to be a seamstress to attach the tassels to the diy boho throw pillow.
Step 5: Add the fluff and tufts
Grab your chenille yarn and cut off one inch pieces. You’ll then pin them on your throw pillow cover in the spots you want them. Then sew them into place.
_____________
This DIY Boho throw pillow cover was not the fastest DIY project I have done, but it definitely allowed me to create a throw pillow cover to match my decor style without having to spend a ton of money.
I have seen other women paint their pillow covers and leave it just at that without adding tassels or tufts or whatever else. And they look amazing that way too. So have fun with this DIY and make it your own.
