“That Day: A Christmas Story” Book Review

Ready for a new perspective on Christmas? On life? My friend Tami Jasso just released her book titled “That Day: A Christmas Story” which lovingly encourages, motivates, and convicts its readers to live with That Day in mind, the day in which we as Christians stand face-to-face with Jesus and our life is reviewed by fire (1 Corinthians 3:12-15). It’s an endearing little story of a married woman struggling with the chaos of Christmas while giving an “imagined glimpse of what the Bema Seat Judgment [That Day] of Christ might look like.”

I love Christmas. Like a lot. But if you’re anything like me, it’s so hard to keep the Reason for the season in mind as we are so excited and distracted by everything that comes with Christmas. I get caught up in the decorations, the gifts, the songs, the movies, the sweets, and the excitement to see family. While these aren’t bad in and of themselves, I want them to remain second after Christ this season. Because of these struggles that we all go through, reading this book helps tremendously to refocus our minds, hearts, and souls to want to live in a way that is pleasing to the Lord, thinking not only about His story and His birth, but also how our actions, words, and decisions are glorifying God as we celebrate Christmas.

Our Life Tested By Fire

I love that this book gives a whole new perspective around Christmas time (and life in general). While it’s just as important to remember Christ’s birth before all the festivities, this endearing and convicting story challenges its readers, us, to remember That Day when our life is looked over by Jesus Himself.

1 Corinthians 3:12-15 says, “Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hat, straw – each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, not only as through fire.”

When we stand before Jesus on this Day, referred to as the Bema Seat Judgment, we will not be tested on our salvation, but rather how we lived our lives God has given us. “That Day: A Christmas Story” encourages each one of us to live our life with That Day in mind. This story truly motivates and convicts us to really think about how we live our life and if we’re living it in a way that will stand the test of fire with Jesus. It reveals how precious time is in this life, knowing that each day here counts for eternity there.

How does this book, this perspective, pertain to Christmas?

Thinking about That Day, allowing the conviction to stir us to live our life with Christ in mind, is something we can and should be doing all year round. But during this time of year, I think we try so hard to remember our Savior’s birth, yet are so easily distracted by everything that comes with Christmas. We get lost in simply trying to think about Christ, not sure how to keep it at the forefront of our mind. However, this book really helps give us a way in which we can keep our focus on Christ, His birth, and His redeeming love.

As we go about this Christmas season and as you work to remember Christ first, think about your actions, your words, your finances, and your time. When you stand before Christ on That Day, what is He going to see in your life during this season, this month? What will be the hay, straw, and wood that are burned up? What will be the precious stones, the gold, and the silver that stand the test of fire? How are you going to live for Christ, remembering His birth and His life, during this season?

This book has changed my life, and I know it will yours

I’ve read this book several times already, and each time I’ve read it, the desire in my heart to have a life filled with things standing the test of fire to bring Jesus praise and glory has grown so much. “That Day: A Christmas Story” has given me a new perspective on life as I go about my day-to-day life.

It’s changed how I think about where my husband and my finances are going.

It’s changed how I spend my time and how I live out my faith, whether on eternal things or not.

It’s changed how I think about sin in my life, previously and currently knowing it’s a horrible thing and something hated by God, but now also seeing it as a worthless thing that has no value in my eternal life with Christ.

I know there will be much of my life burned away because of the worthlessness of my actions and words, but I want my life from this point on to be equivalent to gold, silver, and precious stones standing the test of fire as a result of my faith in Christ.

For That Day Ministries and Boldly Rise

Tami Jasso runs a great ministry called “For That Day Ministries.” She works diligently to reach out to many women to encourage them to live godly lives, building gold, silver, and precious stones in their life as they work for Jesus. This book plays a huge part in this ministry as she inspires others to live for That Day as a result of our faith in Christ.

It stands for everything that Boldly Rise stands for as well! “That Day: A Christmas Story”, though speaking to all, is great in encouraging women to become that Proverbs 31 woman that Boldly Rise emphasizes, fearing the Lord, and living that righteous life, especially during the Christmas season. Because of how this story gives a great picture of what the Bema Seat Judgment experience may be like, it stirs in us the kind of drive, conviction, and excitement to live for Christ that Boldly Rise desires to do.

It’s definitely changed how I’ve looked at things, both on Christmas and on life in general, that for sure!
