Whether you want to Bible journal as a creative outlet or to simply cover each page in notes, Bible journaling is a great way to dig deeper into scripture. Depending on how you want to use your Bible journal, you’ll need certain supplies to help you in your journaling adventure. I’ll share with you the helpful Bible journaling supplies I have used for both creativity and studying.
I encourage you to have fun with your Bible journal with the goal to grow in your knowledge of God’s Word. It’s easy to get caught up in how others use their Bible journal, how beautiful others’ look, and the style of their Bible journaling. But don’t! Bible journaling is not a means to glorify yourself but to glorify God. It’s not meant solely for content to fill Instagram squares. It’s a wonderful tool to use in your relationship with Christ, and subsequently to share with others what you’ve learned.
I’ll start off by sharing some basic Bible journaling supplies followed by creative supplies. Many of the fun supplies I use are from The Daily Grace Co. They have beautiful Bible study supplies and tools that make the Bible journaling experience all the more enjoyable!
Basic Bible Journaling Supplies
1. A Bible Journal
To even start this whole adventure, you’ll need a Bible journal. I bought mine at The Daily Grace Co. for about $35 (on sale, of course). I had specific desires in mind. It’s okay to create a mental list of things you want in a Bible journal that will help you in how you want to use your Bible journal. The Daily Grace Co., Hosanna Revival, and Lifeway are a few great online places to purchase a Bible journal.
2. Pens and Pencils
I only use pens in my journaling Bible because it forces me to think twice about what I want to write in it. However, pencils can work great too depending on what you like best.
3. Highlighters/Colored Pencils
I use Stabilo Pastel highlighters. I like the colors of these highlighters and (for the most part), they don’t bleed through. I use highlighters to distinguish similar phrasing and verses, to highlight important verses, and so much more. Some people like to use highlighters sparingly, which is totally fine. However, my Bible looks like someone dropped a colorful palette on the pages. To my brain, it makes sense. To others, it looks like gibberish. But that’s okay!
4. Sticky Notes
Occasionally I will use sticky notes if I run out of room for notetaking or want to write down a quote I found in notes elsewhere. They come in handy, especially for those of you who are wanting to use your Bible journal for note taking rather than creativity.
Oh So Handy Bible Journaling Supplies
1. Tomoe River Paper
This paper is the best thing I have found for Bible journaling! It’s by far my favorite tool to use. Tomoe paper is paper that is identical to the type of paper used in Bibles. I use this paper to add in leaf pages for extra space to take notes as well as to do some hand lettering. With the extra room I’m able to write more in-depth thoughts, ask questions to answer later on, and use for creativity.
2. Washi Tape
Washi tape is a great way to add in the Tomoe paper to your Bible. And it adds a little creative flare to your Bible.
3. Extra Random Piece of Paper
I use a random piece of paper to put behind the page I’m writing on to limit bleed through and letter indentation onto the other pages. It’s not entirely necessary, but it has helped me what I choose to do some hand lettering with brush pens or press a little too hard with my pen.
4. Pencil Bag
I’ve found that keeping all my supplies in a handy little pencil bag makes it easy to use my Bible journal everywhere and on the go. The Daily Grace Co. has some really cute pencil bags!
Creative Bible Journaling Supplies
1. Tombow Brush Pens
For those who want to do some hand lettering or calligraphy in your Bible, these Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pens are the best that I’ve found so far. They’re fairly inexpensive, they’ve lasted longer than other brush pens I’ve tried, and they don’t bleed through.
2. Paints
I have not tried this yet, but I have seen several people use watercolor and acrylic paints in their Bible journal. And they’re always gorgeous!
3. Markers, Colored Pencils, Colored Brush Pens, Etc.
If you’re looking to draw in your Bible journal, these are some great and simple supplies to use. And they can double as highlighters for the text!
4. Micron Fineliners
In addition to the Tombow brush pens, I use a Micron Fineliner when I want to use a similar style of pen to the brush pen without the precision of a ballpoint pen.
5. Washi Tape
I know I’ve already included washi tape above, but it’s fun to use creatively as well as functionally.
_____________
I treasure flipping through the passages I’ve completed, reading what God has taught me. I pray that it’s a resource I can use years down the road, that my kids can utilize, and that others can be encouraged by. I was hesitant to start Bible journaling initially as I thought it might just be one more thing to complicate my quiet time. But it’s been the opposite. It’s challenged me to dive deeper into God’s Word. And I pray that you will be challenged in the same way and receive abundant blessings from spending time in the Bible.
There’s nothing that says your Bible journaling has to be perfect, that you have to have all these supplies. Keep it simple for you! Don’t make it more than it needs to be. Enjoy it!
