Put a little hand raising emoji in the comments below if you have ever struggled with wanting to read your Bible. If we all did this, we’d see that ALL of us have dealt with this issue at least once, if not several times in our life. But it doesn’t have to be this way! There are several ways to enjoy studying your Bible. And I’m going to give you 12 ways to help bring back that excitement and joy in your Bible studies.
1. Get a fun notebook that excites you to write in.
There are plenty of beautiful notebooks out there to fit your style. Etsy has so many shops that sell notebooks and journals, including ones designed for studying your Bible. The Daily Grace Co. also has some gorgeous journals for many different uses (sermon note journals, blank journals, study journals, journals geared towards certain topics, etc.).
2. Find a bible study that really intrigues you.
We’ve all experienced those times growing up where learning a certain subject was so difficult because we had little to zero interest in it. You now have the freedom to choose what you would like to study, whether that be a specific topic or book of the Bible.
Well Watered Women, The Daily Grace Co., Kim Cash Tate, Jen Wilkin, and Priscilla Shirer all have amazing studies that really draw you into the Bible.
3. Know your learning style.
I am a visual learner. Some of you are audio learners. Others are hands on learners. Knowing your learning style sets you up to get the most out of your studies and makes it easier to retain what you’ve learned. Trying to study in a way that’s difficult for you is the equivalent of trying to swim against the current of a river.
For visual learners and hands on learners, things like underlining and highlighting, writing down verses or key points are great ways to help you study well.
For audio learners, podcasts and video lessons are amazing tools to use while having your Bible open in front of you.
4. Study during your favorite time of day.
I am not a morning person; it’s difficult for me to get up before 8:30. But oddly enough, mornings are my favorite time of the day. And it’s easier for me to do the things I enjoy during that time then when the darkness of night sets in. I find that mornings are the time I have the most motivation. A perfect time to study my Bible.
Find your favorite time of the day, the time that gives you motivation or the time that you actually have some alone time. Use part of it to study the Bible.
5. Create a little nook or spot in your house that brings you joy to spend time in.
Make that your bible study corner. Add some cute comfy pillows (PCB Home has adorably sweet pillows) or a soft throw blanket. Use a side table to set your cup of coffee or pens on. Make it an area that draws you into it.
6. Keep it simple.
Don’t overuse or tire yourself with studying tools or activities. Things like highlighting, coloring a verse, writing out several in depth points, etc. are all great things. But you don’t want to be so involved with the activity that it eventually becomes a burden to keep doing. Pace yourself.
7. Research different studying techniques and choose your favorite.
There are several different ways to study the Bible. Some are very in depth, others are more broad picture.
The Abide Method from Risen Motherhood is a very in depth way to study the Bible. Jen Wilkin uses a 3 step method (comprehension, interpretation, and application) to study books of the Bible. The Well Watered Women website has some helpful tools for sale in their shop.
8. Know what is distracting to you and remove it from your study space.
Phones, tablets, electronics, food, chores, mirrors, and family members are just some examples of what may be distracting to you. Politely ask your husband or kids to give you 30 minutes alone. Put your electronics in the other room. Keep the food in the kitchen. Focus on studying the Bible, not your to-do list.
9. Seek to learn one new thing to share with others.
It’s always exciting to tell people what we’ve learned in God’s Word. Make it a goal to find that one thing to share on Instagram or Facebook or with your husband or kids or friends.
10. Intentionally view studying your Bible as a time of rest rather than work.
Get yourself in the mindset that studying your Bible is a blessing rather than a burden, even if you have to verbally speak it to yourself.
11. Study your Bible with your close friends.
You don’t always have to study by yourself. In fact, it’s crazy beneficial to study with other people. And it’s a lot of fun learning with those who love Jesus and love you.
12. Ask God to give you a deep desire to study His Word.
1 John 5:14-15 says, “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.” Asking to have a desire to study His Word is most definitely within His will!
Prayer is a powerful tool, so use it:)
