If you’re anything like me, then you have a hard time finding ways to encourage your husband when he needs it. So many times, I feel like I lack the words when I so desperately want to find the right ones to cheer my husband up. OR I feel like I say the same things and they just get worn out.
With my husband in the military, there are things that I am not allowed to know. When he’s having a hard day, it’s difficult to know how to specifically encourage him without knowing exactly what’s going on. That brings a whole new level of not knowing how to encourage.
But thank the Lord for His wonderful words, because they are always right there when I have nothing to say or I need something other than my words to encourage. I always love when the perfect verse shows up for my husband and I can send him a quick text to encourage him. It’s like God is saying “Here, this is exactly what he needs right now.”
It’s hard to choose just 21 verses out of 31,102 verses, but these are verses that I have found to be great for encouragement.
Encouraging Verses on Being Strengthened
Psalm 10:17 – “O Lord, you hear the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen their heart.”
Isaiah 40:31 – “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
Romans 8:26 – “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.”
1 Peter 5:8-10 – “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.”
Encouraging Verses on Being Comforted
Psalm 23:1-4 – “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
2 Corinthians 1:3-6 – “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too. If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer.”
Encouraging Verses on Feeling God’s Peace
John 16:33 – “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
Philippians 4:6-7 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Encouraging Verses on Knowing God is With You
Joshua 1:9 – “Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
James 4:7-8 – “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.”
Romans 8:37-39 – “No, in all things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor power, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Encouraging Verses on Rejoicing
Romans 5:3-5 – “More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”
Romans 12:12 – “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.”
James 1:2-3 – “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.”
1 Peter 4:13 – “But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.”
Other Encouraging Verses
Psalm 55:22 – “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you.”
Proverbs 27:17 – “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” ….. I put this one in my list because there is nothing better than you and your husband sharpening each other. This is a great verse to show him that you are there for him too, that you two are in this together and that he is not alone.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 – “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.”
Ecclesiastes 3:11 – “He has made everything beautiful in its time.”
Colossians 3:23 – “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” ….. This one may not seem like your average encouragement verse, but this stems from personal experience with my husband. Whether your husband is in the military or not, he is likely working a full time job that at some points can be hard on him. By sharing this verse with him, it’s a good reminder that he’s working for the Lord first and not for men. Hopefully, this will bring him peace that he can work with his mind on the Lord rather than on the hardships of the job or those around him at his workplace.
1 Peter 5:7 – “Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”

Hopefully at least one of these verses stands out to you the next time your husband needs encouragement. I’ve found that shooting him a quick text or writing a little note with the verse is a great way to share the verse. That way they have it with them throughout their tough day.
