Last year I acquired a new found love interest… with baskets! I found myself constantly looking for baskets, taking a detour in the store just to peruse the basket selection, and ordering way more than I probably should have. In a house that has one usable closet, baskets have been my lifesaver! How? In this post, I’ll share with you several ways to use baskets for home decor AND storage. Plus I’ll give you a couple bonus decor tips to hide what you’re storing in your baskets.
Why Baskets?
We moved to the UK last year on military orders. The house we decided to rent only has ONE usable closet. The garage is spider infested, so anything stored there had to be in sealed boxes. Without closets, I’ve had to get creative with storage and organization that doesn’t involve changing the house itself. With my love for home decor, baskets became my top go-to for several of my storage solutions!
There are so many different styles, sizes, and colors of baskets. Because I decorate with a mix of farmhouse and boho, I love that several baskets fit right into the natural and neutral styles I have in our home. Whether you have the same style as me or a polar opposite style, there’s a basket for you!

How to decorate your storage baskets
Unless you place baskets up high, everything within the basket will be exposed. Even if it’s organized, it could clash and make a space feel overcrowded. We don’t want that! So, with these tips, you’ll be able to hide what you’re storing and add stylish home decor with your baskets. Functional home decor is the best home decor!
- Use throw blankets to cover items. Drape one corner of the throw blanket over the edge of the basket to give it a cozy look.
- Use throw pillows to cover items. Place a couple decorative throw pillows on top of the items to hide what’s underneath.
- Use faux greenery, a garland, or a handful of faux stems arranged to camouflage the stored items.
- Use a mixture to make it look even better! Mix throw blankets with throw pillows for the extra cozy look. Add a stem of greenery to make it pop!
- Place baskets up high. It’ll add pretty decor to a shelving space, will hide what’s inside, and will keep little ones out.
- Place baskets in furniture pieces. Set them under coffee tables, in cube storage units, or any hollow spot in your furniture.
- Select baskets based on the style you have in your home. Metal and wicker baskets are perfect for rustic/farmhouse styles. Seagrass baskets go well with farmhouse, boho, and beachy styles. Hyacinth baskets are perfect for the modern farmhouse look.

Your clever way to mix practical & aesthetic works pleasingly to the eye. Woven baskets to cart wet/dry laundry are well nigh impossible to find. The many medium straw baskets in our home tend to gather upon the hutch/dresser. They are attractive but now I’m musing about their futures. We’re way passed need for toy etc baskets, but could ‘see’ uses for such in different rooms, with pretty throws collected in past decades & languishing in the linen cupboards. Humm Boldlyrise has started something in our home.
